In recent weeks, Canadian sports fans have come under fire for booing the United States of America’s national anthem at various sporting events. The incidents occurred after United States president Donald Trump issued multiple threats and untoward comments at the country.
Those comments, and the subsequent booing, only served to ratchet up the tension between the rival USA and Canada hockey teams ahead of this week’s 4 Nations Face-Off, and an international tournament featuring the US, Canada, Sweden and Finland.
Through one round of games, the USA led the tournament with three points after a 6-1 victory over Finland. Canada sat in second after a 4-3 overtime victory over Sweden. But the two favorites were set to meet Saturday with the winner more or less clinching their spot in the tournament final.
What was already going to be a heated affair hit a new level of spiciness on Saturday night when the teams engaged in three fights within the first nine seconds of the contest.
The first fight of evening featured Canada’s Brandon Hagel and USA’s Matthew Tkachuk.

Then it was Matthew’s brother Brady who dropped the gloves with Canada’s Sam Bennett.

Finally, Team USA’s JT Miller engaged in a scrap with the much larger Colton Parayko of Canada.

Fans both in the building and online were fired up over the fights. Then three-time NHL MVP Connor McDavid darn near ripped the roof off of Montreal’s Bell Centre with an opening goal to put Canada up 1-0.
Team USA’s Jake Guentzel responded, however, evening the score at 1-1 mid-way through the first period, where it currently remains.
