A 3-2 round-of-16 overtime win over Mexico in Bogotá, Colombia, puts the USA one victory away from its best run at the U-20 Women’s World Cup since its fourth-place finish in 2016.
Princeton striker Pietra Tordin’s fourth goal of the tournament gave the USA a 10th-minute lead, which Californian Val Vargas, a UCLA sophomore, equalized 12 minutes later.
The USA’s second first-half lead, a strike by the Utah Royals’ Ally Sentnor, also lasted only 12 minutes. The Mexicans, outshot 22-13, survived a barrage until Florida State’s Jordynn Dudley hit the overtime gamewinner.
Quarterfinal clash: The USA, which won its last of three U-20 World Cups in 2012, will play the winner of Germany-Argentina on Sunday (8 pm ET).
