Mexico put together a winning formula against Jamaica, even though it only worked to the tune of one to nothing.
Mexico won 1-0 and accounts from The New York Times show they had chances starting early. In minute two, Mexico had a scoring chance with the ball bouncing around the box. This would repeat in minute thirteen but both chances would end without goals (or counters).
Later in the match, more action would occur. However, despite all the tries and attempts there would only be one score.acor
In all, Mexico would compile more shots on target than Jamaica. Totals would see Mexico with 20 shots to 13 and nine shots on goal to four. That would all amount to more chances for Mexico and the eventual lone goal of the match for El Tri.
The goal came in the 69th minute from Aeteaga. Sanchez would have the ball on the right side of the pitch up near the eighteen. He would have a beautiful cross over to the left side. There would be a struggle with the ball and it would bounce around. Several players touch it with players on both sides on the fray near the ball. It would settle at the left atop the eighteen. The ball would be tapped to Arteaga. He would strike from just beyond the eighteen and bury it in the net.
After the goal, things would settle down for a few minutes. At minute 75, Mexico would have another decent attack. With seven men in the attack it was another great opportunity. Quiñones would eventually take the shot from deep on the left side. It would register as a shot on goal but one with a glorious save.
No more goals would score in the match. Mexico wins 1-0 over Jamaica in the CONMEBOL Copa América opener. Jamaica will play Ecuador Wednesday at six. Mexico faces Venezuela Wednesday at nine. Then Mexico will play Ecuador and Jamaica will fight it out against Venezuela. Venezuela beat Ecuador 2-1 in the other opening match of the group. The opening round will come to a close over next weekend.
