Yankees legend eats crow on Mets: ‘I was wrong’ about them, he tells America

At the end of the seventh inning Saturday, New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter asked his fellow FOX Sports teammates: “What happened to all the momentum” with the New York Mets?

A half-inning later, Jeter was introduced to the never-say-die Mets, who scoared five runs in the eighth inning to spark a 6-2 win against the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 1 of the NL Division Series.

“I’ll be the first one to say it. I was wrong right here,” Jeter said on the FOX post-game show. “It seemed like (Zack) Wheeler was so dominant on the mound, when they took him out of the game, one through nine the Mets were running to the bat rack. We know what it’s like when there’s a dominant starter. You’re just saying hang in there as much as we can until they take him out and then we have a chance. They deserve a lot of credit because they didn’t give up.”

The Mets managed five baserunners — one hit and four walks — against Zack Wheeler, who overwhelmed them with nine strikeouts on 30 swings and misses, a career high.

One could not blame Jeter — “I expect them to finish this out,” he said at the time — necessarily for feeling confident in the Phillies, whom he predicted to win Game 1 before the contest. But even he knew better: Wheeler wasn’t going the distance. He finished with 111 pitches. New pitchers gave the Mets bats life, a point that Fox announcers Adam Wainwright and A.J. Pierzynski made throughout the broadcast.

The Mets went 1 for 21 against Wheeler, and 5 for 5 against Phillies relievers Jeff Hoffman, Matt Strahm and Orion Kerkering in the eighth inning. The pivotal frame included: a single by Francisco Alvarez, a walk to Francisco Lindor, an RBI single by Mark Vientos, an RBI single by Brandon Nimmo, a sacrifice fly by Pete Alonso, a single by Jose Iglesias, an RBI single by by J.D. Martines and a sacrifice fly by Starling Marte.

Boston Red Sox great David Ortiz attributed the Phillies’ quiet day to how long they’ve been sitting since their regular-season ended Sept. 29.

“These guys — they were cold, (they) were sitting just waiting while the Mets were playing, making this comeback,” Ortiz said. “It’s just the beginning of the series. I don’t want to call them out. It matters a lot, especially this time of year.”
