The day America died | PennLive letters

To paraphrase the memorable lyrics from Don McLean’s wistful ode to 1959 and music: Nov. 5, 2024 is the day America died.

“A republic, if you can keep it,” Ben Franklin answered soberly in 1787 when asked what type of government the new nation would have, meaning that a democratic republic depends on the active and informed involvement of its people to remain healthy.

A majority has decided that America will be healthier on Jan. 20, 2025 as an autocratic plutocracy, ruled by a cadre of billionaires and a peevishly vengeful man who declares he has no regard for law and the U.S. Constitution.

Franklin’s republic will then convert to a régime mirroring Russia, North Korea, China, Hungary and Venezuela.

Welcome to Orwell’s 1984 dystopia, forty years later. May the majority find eternal contentment with its choice.
