Even as the world stares at two intractable and fiery conflicts – Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Palestine – another seems to be brewing in South America. Venezuela has doubled down on its efforts to acquire the disputed area of Essequibo from neighbouring Guyana. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s moves have elicited warnings from his Guyanese counterpart Irfaan Ali. In what could act as a spark in a tinderbox, a Guyana military helicopter has gone missing near the disputed region.
