Situation still very tense in Venezuela, after last presidential elections which saw the confirmation of Nicolas Maduro amid tensions, violence and doubts from the international community on the regularity of the vote. The president, in office continuously since 2013 and just re-elected for a third term until 2031, he carries on: after having arrested thousands of dissidents following the protests that broke out across the country and having announced that they will be sent to forced labor, Maduro has started to shoot zero against the United States, against Elon Musk accusing him of having hacked the Venezuelan electoral system and more generally against social networks, which according to the Chavista leader “spread fake news and are enemies of the Venezuelan people”. In particular WhatsApp for Maduro “it is one tool used by fascists” and is used by opponents to “organize a coup d’état”. Therefore it should be put in the bando: having said that, the National Assembly has ordered the blocking of X for 10 days and is developing a reform to restrict the free use of WhatsApp and TikTok.
We try to avoid a Guaidò-bis
The international community does not stand idly by. Although distracted by the Olympic event until a few days ago, the French president showed up Emmanuel Macron, who in a phone call with his Brazilian counterpart Lula agreed to avoid a “Guaidò-bis”, after instead countries such as Argentina, Peru and the United States themselves had officially recognized Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, the opposition candidate, as president-elect of Venezuela. Maduro is also reproached for having denied access to the country to the European Union election observation mission, on the pretext that Brussels has not lifted sanctions against political figures close to the regime. For this reason Lula would like to hypothesize one sort of second chance for the Venezuelan leader, but it is the Venezuelan opposition itself that is not convinced of a solution of this type: “We won, the result of the elections on July 28 is non-negotiable”, opposition leader Maria Corina Machado told the Spanish newspaper El Pais . In all of this, the UN says it is concerned about “arbitrary detentions” and the United States is also taking action, albeit more focused on what is happening in Ukraine and especially in the Middle East. Moreover, the events are connected, because Maduro has been officially recognized as president by a few countries, but among these there are Russia, Iran, China. The latest move thought up by Washington is to grant its Venezuelan rival theamnesty in exchange for giving up power, at the natural end of the current mandate (December).
The accusation of collusion with drug trafficking
In fact, in the United States Maduro is accused of collusion with drug trafficking in Venezuela, so much so that in 2020 a $15 million reward was offered for information on the leader’s alleged criminal activity. However, the reward is still valid, as Elon Musk himself recently recalled, but to which the States would now like to turn a blind eye, also renouncing extradition and possible trial, provided, however, that Maduro gives up his seat. Him though he doesn’t seem to have any intention of giving in and the feeling is that we will continue with the arm wrestling. Some experts hypothesize for the Chavista exponent an end to Gaddafi, while in South America the concern is for a new wave of migration: in recent years already a quarter of the population of Venezuela, over 7 million people, has left the country, generating social crises and security alarms in the countries of the area, in particularly Colombia, Brazil and Chile.
