Earlier this month, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) reported its August sales jumped no less than 36.7% compared to the same period last year. They are also 16% ahead of 2023 for the January through August period, which is no small feat.
The Year-to-date sales totaled 283,611 vehicles – which isn’t much by Toyota’s standards, for example, but still represents an excellent performance for the tiny Japanese automaker. In fact, Mazda achieved its best-ever August and second-best monthly US sales performance, with the CX-30, CX-50, CX-70, and CX-90 crossover SUVs representing the highlights.
In fact, while the classic best-seller – CX-5 – contracted by 10%, the new large models such as the CX-90 had stellar results: the full-size crossover SUV based on the new Large Product Group architecture with rear- and all-wheel drive with longitudinal engine layout jumped no less than 173% compared to the same period last year. Obviously, Americans like these big and fancy CUVs equipped with the 3.3-liter e-Skyactiv G turbo inline-six mild hybrid engine or the 2.5-liter PHEV version.
So, what should Mazda do to continue along the upward route? According to the parallel universes of vehicular CGI, they need to start thinking about bringing back the pickup truck series to North America. Case in point, the imaginative realm of digital car content creators has a solution for the unofficial, hypothetical follow-up of the popular Mazda B series of pickup trucks and as a larger model positioned above the current Isuzu-based Mazda BT-50.
The good folks over at the AutoYa info channel on YouTube have a satellite venue dubbed AutoYa Interior, and that’s where all the (CGI) Mazda action is happening in the video embedded below. More precisely, the host believes that the Japanese automaker could return with a pickup truck to the US market if they use the CX-70 and CX-90 innards, especially the mighty 340-hp e-Skyactiv G mild hybrid powertrain. They dubbed it Mazda ‘BT-100’ to signal its appurtenance to the bigger series of models, and the channel’s resident pixel master also came up with an unofficial, hypothetical design.
Not only that, but the CGI expert also tricked out the design project with the signature color reel – both inside and outside. So, what do you think? Could Mazda bring back a pickup truck alongside the crossover and SUV lineup? Also, if the ‘BT-100’ somehow becomes real, should it go against the mid-size roster headed by the Toyota Tacoma or try to break into the full-size light-duty corner of the market now that Nissan is making space with the decision to retire the Titan series?
If you want our two cents on the matter, Mazda would be safe to bet on the mid-size pack – Tacoma can’t be budged from its throne, but the rest of its competitors are not exactly indestructible.
