Satellite imagery captured wildfire smoke filling skies across large portions of South America on September 17 as a record-breaking number of fires continued burning across multiple countries.
According to Reuters, Brazilian officials recorded 346,112 fire hot spots across all 13 countries of South America from the start of the year up to September 11, surpassing a record set in 2007.
