WRC to debut in Paraguay from 2025

WRC to debut in Paraguay from 2025

The World Rally Championship (WRC) will race in Paraguay for the first time from next season.

Contract:

Multi-year agreement sees Paraguay become the 38th country to host a WRC round
Rally will be based out of Encarnacion on the Paraná River and take place through the Itapúa region

Context:

WRC’s official statement reveals this move realises a ‘long-held ambition [of] returning to two events annually in South America’, implying that Chile will be retained on the calendar next season. This adds to the recent two-year deal signed for the Rally Islas Canarias and the ten-year agreement for the Rally Saudi Arabia.

Paraguay’s emphasis on sustainable technology played a major role in securing a place on the WRC schedule. The country generates 100 per cent of its grid electricity from sustainable resources, echoing the cars in WRC which run on 100 per cent fossil-free fuel.

Comment:

“We have been in discussions with Paraguay already for a number of years and I am incredibly pleased to see this agreement across the line,” said WRC’s senior event director Simon Larkin.

“There is no questioning the nation’s passion for rallying and we cannot wait to transmit this passion, as well as Paraguay’s spectacular scenery around the world.”

Coming next:

The 2024 season continues this weekend with the Rally Poland, taking place from 27th to 30th June.
