I was surprised to read the two articles in on the Copa América soccer championship game in Miami this summer. Both written by AP writers, they focused on negatives only: the chaos caused by CONMEBOL’s lack of preparation for an event of this magnitude and the ensuing series of events, and the well-known decline of Lionel Messi and its effect on soccer world.
Absent was a soccer fan’s view of the game, the nuances of the preparation, the amazing success of the Colombian team all throughout the whole championship, that a past hero (James Rodriguez) was granted the distinction of best player of the tournament and golden ball award for six assists. Colombia was given the prize of the cleanest team of the tour. And yes, Argentina won with a late goal by their best goal-scoring player in the waning minutes of the game.
