Bermuda’s junior tennis team concluded their campaign at the BJKCJ DCJ North/Central America & Caribbean Pre-Qualifying Junior Davis Cup in Guatemala City, finishing 14th overall after a narrow 2-1 defeat to Trinidad and Tobago in the 13th/14th place play-off match.
Jadon Spriggs got Bermuda off to a promising start, battling back to defeat Connor Carrington 3-5, 4-0, 10 in the opening singles match. However, Tobiah Goodchild was unable to maintain the momentum, losing in straight sets 4-0, 4-0 to Nirav Dougdeen.
With the tie level at 1-1, the doubles match became the decider. Spriggs and Goodchild teamed up for Bermuda, facing Dougdeen and Jovan Garibana. The Trinidad and Tobago pair edged out the first set in a tie-breaker, 5-4, before closing out the match with a 4-2 victory in the second set.
In other news, tournament officials have corrected a result from Bermuda’s earlier match against the Bahamas. The initial report indicated a 3-0 win for the Bahamas, but the corrected result shows a 2-1 victory for the Bahamas. The correction stems from the opening singles match, where Tristan Pettit actually defeated Aiden Ritchie in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3.
Despite the close losses and the corrected result, the Bermuda team gained valuable experience competing against international opponents in the Junior Davis Cup. This tournament will serve as an important stepping stone for their future development in tennis.
