Forecasters with the National Weather Service of New Orleans said Sunday morning that the system does not pose an immediate threat to southeast Louisiana. It’s still too soon to tell whether there will be direct impacts to the local area, forecasters said.Â
If it forms, the storm would be named Helene and would be the eighth named storm of the 2024 hurricane season.Â
Tropical wave near Africa
Hurricane forecasters were tracking a tropical wave near the west coast of Africa Sunday morning that they said could develop as it moves west during the next several days.Â
A tropical depression or storm could form late next week, forecasters said. The wave had no chance of forming in the next two days and a 40% chance of forming within the next week.Â
Low pressure system southeast of BermudaÂ
Located several hundred miles southeast of Bermuda, a low pressure system was producing increasingly organized showers and thunderstorms Sunday morning. The low is expected to remain in a dry environment, forecasters said, but a short-lived tropical depression could form as the system moves north.Â
As of Sunday, the low had a 20% chance of forming in the next two days and the next week. Â
