The nations that stand out in this respect are from South America, with 106 thousand more seats expected on flights from Argentina, 83 thousand more from Chile, and 21 thousand more on aircraft from Uruguay.
The city of Rio could also set a record for international tourists, with 991 thousand international passengers expected to arrive from January to March next year, Embratur noted. This figure represents an increase of 26 percent from pre-pandemic levels, with a surge of 204 thousand people.
This summer, the agency expects the city to have 68 more weekly flights from South America, as well as nine more from the US, eight from Europe, and one from Asia.
Embratur President Marcelo Freixo celebrated the figures at the inauguration ceremony of the first direct flight between Rio and Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, at Galeão Airport on Monday (Dec. 16), offered by the foreign airline Sky Airline.
“We’re going to break all records and reach $7 billion in international tourism—which means more jobs and income here in our city, in our state, and in our country,” he said.
The connection between Rio and Montevideo is set to have four flights a week, with some 5 thousand more people expected to arrive in the state capital each month.
