The Brazilian government said it would put $10.6 million into a public-private push to expand international flights.
It said Brazil’s northeast region is a primary focus of the program. The region boasts “idyllic beaches, vibrant culture and exquisite cuisine” that can compete with the Caribbean, according to Marcelo Freixo, president of the Brazilian Tourist Board.
The initiative builds on an $800,000 pilot program from 2024 and is a joint effort by Embratur, the Ministry of Tourism, and the Ministry of Ports and Airports.Â
According to tourism minister Silvio Costa Filho, this is the first time Brazil has implemented a comprehensive program to attract international flights. “The government’s goal is to strengthen international tourism in Brazil, boost our economy and create opportunities,” he said.
The program will be rolled out in phases throughout next year, beginning in late January with a call for proposals focused on regular international flights to Northeast Brazil.
In March, Brazil will launch a call for charter flights, followed by a focus on sub-regional domestic flights in the second half of the year.
The goal is to generate at least 500,000 new international seats in the upcoming years.
Brazil said this year’s pilot program resulted in a 20% increase in issued airline tickets from overseas markets and an economic return of $4.72 for every 20 cents invested.
