Seven years later, storm-hit BVI's Peter Island Resort to reopen | News

After a seven-year hiatus brought on by Hurricane Irma, the largest island resort in the British Virgin Islands is set to reopen on Dec. 1.

Peter Island Resort, closed since 2017, has undergone a rebranding that has transformed the property to a new level of luxury, according to a released statement.

In addition to relocating the heart of the resort to a stretch on Deadman’s Beach, “guests of the new Peter Island Resort will find stunning new beach front rooms and suites, two masterfully redesigned villas, an extensive Yacht Club, two restaurants, a 10,000 square foot seaside spa, and an expanded events and meetings area,” the release stated.

Further, it noted that throughout the transformation, priority was placed on preserving the 52-room resort’s intimate, casual elegance and hundreds of acres of unspoiled tropical island.

“We’re pleased to announce our official opening date of December 1, 2024, for the unveiling of a new Peter Island and are excited to introduce guests to an exquisitely reimagined resort with the same beauty and charm that has enchanted visitors for decades,” David Van Andel, president of Peter Island Resort, said.

He added that at the upgraded Peter Island Resort, “both land-loving and seafaring guests will enjoy Peter Island in their own way. This includes the island’s many natural wonders including idyllic beaches, the scenic sunset loop showcasing panoramic views of the Virgin Islands, and the inviting blue-green seas ideal for water sports, swimming, sailing, fishing, and snorkeling.”

According to the statement, what was once Sprat Bay Marina is now the enhanced and expanded Peter Island Yacht Club. It has been redesigned to better accommodate vessels of different shapes and sizes including multiple superyachts of up to 200 feet.

Seafaring guests will be welcomed ashore to a variety of new offerings, including a Yacht Club swimming pool, a recreational area featuring lawn games and pickleball, bocce ball and basketball courts, Drunken Pelican bar and grill, Sea Chest Boutique, and a commissary, the release said.

Also, foodies will enjoy the elegant, beachfront fine dining at The Drake Steakhouse “with its surf and turf menu and extensive wine collection. For a casual chic dining option, guests can dine at the Yacht Club’s Drunken Pelican, a restaurant and bar serving inventive dishes, artfully crafted cocktails, and a selection of wines and craft beers,” according to the statement.

Next to the Yacht Club is an expanded events and meetings area for groups of up to 180 people. The new, oceanfront 3,000 square foot conference center is flanked by two event lawns and a large, open-air veranda.

“This meeting and event facility has an on-site kitchen, flexible indoor spaces, and scenic outdoor areas ideal for events, weddings, receptions, meetings, and break-out sessions. Overlooking the Sir Francis Drake Channel with the island of Tortola in the distance, this location will quickly become a coveted venue for weddings, special events, and inspiring meetings,” the release added.

Nestled along Big Reef Bay, the Spa is the resort’s tranquil, seaside retreat that features seven treatment rooms, a fitness center, a yoga and meditation sanctuary, a manicure/pedicure salon, an outdoor pool, and an ocean-front hot tub.
