Central America’s trade agreement expected to spur more dairy trade

The U.S. Dairy Export Council Chairman says he’s excited for tariff-free dairy trade into Central America in the coming years.

Alex Peterson tells Brownfield dairy products are experiencing significant demand growth throughout that region.

“In 2026 we’ll have CAFTA go into full implementation and have zero tariffs on dairy products in a lot of those countries in Central America, and that’s just a tremendous opportunity for us because we really like to have a strong foothold especially here close,” he shares.

The Central America-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR) is the first free trade pact between the United States and a group of smaller developing economies, including Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

The third-generation Missouri dairy farmer is also the chairman of the United Dairy Industry Association.

Peterson says the Middle East and North Africa are additional regions that present strong export opportunities over the long term.

“That’s been a great story as we take our nutrition research and dub it into other languages, other geographies, and other cultures, and help build demand not just here but everywhere because that’s what’s going to help pull our economics through to the next generation,” he says.

Brownfield’s Larry Lee recently interviewed Peterson following the joint annual meeting of the United Dairy Industry Association, National Dairy Promotion and Research Board, and National Milk Producers Federation.
