Guatemala’s power regulator CNEE approved reference terms for an energy supply call planned by the country’s electricity distributors.
The utilities, Deorsa and Deocsa, known collectively as Energuate, and Eegsa, now have 80 days to draft bidding rules.
The process is open to renewable energies, including storage, and technologies in operation when the tender is launched.
For geothermal, offers may be presented as public-private partnerships.
The contracts will run for 15 years starting on May 1 of 2030, 2031, 2032 or 2033 for new plants, which are those that entered service after January 1, 2024.
For plants in operation, contracts will be for up to five years for supply starting May 1, 2030, or less for subsequent supply start dates.

RATES
CNEE also released electricity rates for November-January, which in the case of the social tariff that benefits around 3.6mn families or 94% of users will remain unchanged for Eegsa and fall 1.4% and 0.9% for Deocsa and Deorsa, respectively.
Rates in charts below are in local currency, with one quetzal equal to US$0.13.
The non-social rate for Eegsa will remain unchanged and dip 1.8% and 0.9% for Deocsa and Deorsa, respectively.
“The diversification of the electricity generation matrix in Guatemala has allowed electricity prices to be kept stable for regulated users,” according to the regulator, which highlights the seasonality in electricity generation, such as an increase from hydro plants.
