I didn’t support Claudia Scheinbaum for President of Mexico. I thought she was a run-of-the-mill leftist. Moreover, she was and is a puppet for her political boss Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, (AMLO).
He was and is a radical leftist created and nurtured his entire political career by the PRI, the criminal political party that ran Mexico for seven decades. He ran for President in 2006, lost and pulled a Trump before Trump, crying he was cheated. He lost again in 2012. He says cheated.
He organized his own political party he called a “National Regeneration Movement Party;” MORENA. His own family members were videotaped being paid with grocery bags full of cash, millions of pesos. These cash-carrying politicos received good paying jobs and concessions from the President.
Leading the pack of AMLO supporters are Army and Navy officers who have been appointed by AMLO to manage large construction jobs throughout the country including a new airport which few like and canceled an award-winning airport that was half finished when AMLO violated countless laws and contracts with private firms that won contracts in an open bidding process. They are now very rich generals and admirals who won’t have to work in retirement. Most contracts they manage are not from open-bidding processes.
So, now, new Presidenta Claudia Scheinbaum takes over the Presidency, the first by a woman in the two largest countries in North America (by population).
So, her first two demands are that Mexico junk its judicial system to be replaced by judges first nominated by her government then elected by the electorate. Unlike the U.S., however, all judges will be elected, local, state and federal while in the U.S. federal judges are not elected, they are all appointed by the President and confirmed by the United States Senate.
The Mexican judiciary will deteriorate as the ultimate protector of the people. Partisan pressure and corruption will highlight the future of justice in Mexico, thanks to AMLO and Claudia.
Let me be clear, the justice system in Mexico is terrible. They don’t have juries. A judge hears local civil and criminal cases. That judge relies on briefs from lawyers and makes his/her decision from them along with citations.
However, at the state and federal levels the atmosphere is different.
A good example is when the Mexican Supreme Court stopped AMLO in his tracks when he tried to change the constitution so that he could change the judicial system with a majority of Congress. The Constitution clearly stated that such a move requires a two-thirds “supermajority” of the Congress to change the constitution. The court won that one.
In the June 2 election, the MORENA party did achieve enough congressional and senate seats to come within pesos distance of the “super-majority.” Everyone knows the AMLO/Scheinbaum bulldozer paid a handful of non-Morena “congresistas” to achieve a “super-majority.”
Despite my hope that she would use her natural superior scientific intelligence she appears to be just another political hack guided by her political “godfather” — AMLO.
Example: President AMLO stupidly sent a letter to the King of Spain demanding that Spain apologize for the treatment of Mexico’s indigenous (Indians) 500 years ago. Spain ignored the secretly-sent letter then released part of it and issued a news release objecting to the letter and what was behind it 500 years after the facts. Consequently, President-elect Claudia did not send an invitation to the King of Spain to attend her inauguration on 1 October.
That does not sit well with me. Environmental Scientist Claudia has taken some dumb political positions in her life such as opposing the original NAFTA agreement negotiated by President George H.W. Bush and Ivy League educated Mexican Presidents. I thought she had grown up; she hasn’t.
Like the Spanish government said when the news broke about AMLO’s stupid letter to the King of Spain, it is not possible nor honest to hold the history of 500 years ago to 21st Century standards. I agree.
Claudia is at fault for not burying the insult AMLO made with his letter to begin with.
I expected better from “Presidenta Claudia.” PhD Claudia.
