ForÂmer top naÂtionÂal swimÂmer RanÂdall AtÂtin and vetÂerÂan triathÂlete JacqueÂline JodÂhan withÂstood chalÂlengÂing conÂdiÂtions to comÂplete the Eighth AnÂnuÂal Bente WeÂber MemoÂrÂiÂal 4.2km Cross-chanÂnel Swim from Nevis to St Kitts on March 28. The smooth-stroking AtÂtin finÂished third among the men (1:09.21/fifth overÂall) while the plucky JodÂhan was the sevÂenth place women finÂishÂer (1:18.44/16th overÂall).
The top three places went to AmerÂiÂcans as RhiÂan PurÂdy, who set a new record in 1:05.21, Roger Brown (1:05.38) and Marlise DavidÂson (1:06:07) claimed first, secÂond and third place reÂspecÂtiveÂly. The open waÂter crossÂing beÂtween Oualie Beach and CockÂleshell Beach preÂsentÂed the swimÂmers with windy conÂdiÂtions, chopÂpy seas, tricky curÂrents and the need for skilÂful navÂiÂgaÂtion to mainÂtain a diÂrect course to “the MainÂland.”
This year’s verÂsion of the event atÂtractÂed a record 98 parÂticÂiÂpants (57 women and 41 men). At the afÂter-race prize-givÂing cerÂeÂmoÂny, comÂpetiÂtors comÂmendÂed the orÂganÂisÂers for their stagÂing of the event and their hosÂpiÂtalÂiÂty. The race orÂganÂisÂers, in turn, exÂpressed the hope that the event will conÂtinÂue to atÂtract more and more reÂgionÂal swimÂmers and grow from strength to strength.
