Attin, Jodhan swim from Nevis to St Kitts

For­mer top na­tion­al swim­mer Ran­dall At­tin and vet­er­an triath­lete Jacque­line Jod­han with­stood chal­leng­ing con­di­tions to com­plete the Eighth An­nu­al Bente We­ber Memo­r­i­al 4.2km Cross-chan­nel Swim from Nevis to St Kitts on March 28. The smooth-stroking At­tin fin­ished third among the men (1:09.21/fifth over­all) while the plucky Jod­han was the sev­enth place women fin­ish­er (1:18.44/16th over­all).

The top three places went to Amer­i­cans as Rhi­an Pur­dy, who set a new record in 1:05.21, Roger Brown (1:05.38) and Marlise David­son (1:06:07) claimed first, sec­ond and third place re­spec­tive­ly. The open wa­ter cross­ing be­tween Oualie Beach and Cock­leshell Beach pre­sent­ed the swim­mers with windy con­di­tions, chop­py seas, tricky cur­rents and the need for skil­ful nav­i­ga­tion to main­tain a di­rect course to “the Main­land.”

This year’s ver­sion of the event at­tract­ed a record 98 par­tic­i­pants (57 women and 41 men). At the af­ter-race prize-giv­ing cer­e­mo­ny, com­peti­tors com­mend­ed the or­gan­is­ers for their stag­ing of the event and their hos­pi­tal­i­ty. The race or­gan­is­ers, in turn, ex­pressed the hope that the event will con­tin­ue to at­tract more and more re­gion­al swim­mers and grow from strength to strength.
