U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell applauded the Biden/Harris administration’s executive order targeting trigger activators, also known as “Glock switches,” Thursday, as well as an effort address the trauma caused by active shooter drills in schools. The order was signed after a mass shooting in Birmingham that killed four people and injured 17.
“Machine gun converters like the one used in Saturday night’s mass shooting are designed for one purpose — mass killing,” Sewell said. “They have no place on the streets of America. I applaud President Biden for taking action to restrict the availability of these dangerous devices and for the Biden-Harris Administration’s strong commitment to tackling gun violence over the past four years.”
Glock switches can be attached to semi-automatic handguns, allowing them to fire at the same speed as an automatic weapon. A semi-automatic fires one round with each trigger pull. An automatic weapon fires rounds as long as the trigger is pulled. Despite the common nickname, the manufacturer of Glock handguns has no affiliation with the switches and they can be attached to other weapons.

Sewell also spoke on the House floor Tuesday to recognize the victims of Saturday’s mass shooting. She was then joined by colleagues of the Alabama delegation for a moment of silence on the floor.
Biden will also call on a new task force to issue a report in 90 days on federal capacity to detect and seize the devices, as well as plans to combat the threats.
