Who is Mike Rogers? Alabama congressman reportedly being considered as Trump’s secretary of defense

Alabama Congressman Mike Rogers is reportedly being considered to serve as the secretary of defense when President-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House for a second term in January.

Rep. Rogers, a Republican, was first elected to represent east Alabama in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2002. He sailed to victory in an uncontested re-election bid this week, with an endorsement from Trump, saying Rogers was “doing a fantastic job.”

Last year, Rogers became the first Alabama representative to chair the Armed Services Committee.

Politico reported on Friday that Rogers is among four Republicans being considered to lead the Defense Department. Others on the list are U.S. Rep. Mike Waltz of Florida, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and U.S. Sen Tom Cotton of Arkansas, according to Politico.

“Rogers is a relatively low-key lawmaker despite his seniority,” the Politico report said.” And though he’s not as personally close to the former president as other contenders for the Pentagon or other top national security jobs, Rogers is nonetheless a strong political ally and Trump defender.”

Rogers’ office did not respond to requests for comment.

When Trump burst onto the national political scene in 2015, Rogers initially threw his support behind former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush in the GOP primary. After Trump clinched the nomination, Rogers said he would vote for him.

“I have pledged from the beginning to support the Republican presidential nominee even if it was not one of the candidates I initially preferred,” Rogers said in 2016.

The Politico report said that “Trump and Rogers align most closely on a policy issue near and dear to both of them: space.”

Rogers, 66, has criticized the Biden administration for keeping the U.S. Space Command headquarters in Colorado, rather than relocating it to Huntsville.

Rogers found himself in the news last year over a confrontation with Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, who was not supporting the reappointment of Kevin McCarthy as speaker of the house. Rogers later apologized, saying he “lost his temper” amid 14 failed votes to elect a speaker.

If Rogers became the secretary of defense, he would likely succeed another Alabama native in the job. The current secretary is Lloyd Austin, a Mobile native who became the first Black person to hold the position.

Rogers’ district in east Alabama includes the Anniston Army Depot. It is near Fort Moore, the Georgia military post once known as Fort Benning.

Rogers grew up in Calhoun County, according to his website. He graduated from Saks High School, earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science and Master of Public Administration at Jacksonville State University, and graduated from the Birmingham School of Law.
