Arizona was named one of the least charitable states in the U.S. in a recent study.
The new study, conducted by WalletHub, compared the 50 states using 17 indicators of charitable behavior, including each state’s volunteer rate, share of income donated and number of food banks per capita.
Arizona ranked 49th, just above New Mexico. Meanwhile, other neighboring states like Utah and Colorado fell in the top 10.
Overall, the United States is considered a generous country in terms of charitable contributions, with U.S. donors giving nearly $560 billion to charity in 2023, according to the World Giving Index’s report from 2024.
According to Giving USA, more than half of the funds come directly from individuals, and nearly 61 million people across the country also contribute with their time, serving a combined total of 4.1 billion hours per year, or the equivalent of $122.9 billion in contributions. Overall, the country ranks as the sixth most generous nation globally, according to the World Giving Index.
Here’s a roundup of the most and least charitable states in the U.S., why Arizona ranked low in the study and how you can participate in supporting charities according to what best fits your schedule and resources.

Arizona ranked lowest among all U.S. states for the charitable giving category, which evaluated factors like the share of income people donate to charities, the share of people donating their time, the number of public charities in proportion to the population and the share of homeless people currently in shelters.
The state underperformed in several factors in this category. For instance, Arizona ranked as the second state with the fewest charities in proportion to the population. However, it performed slightly better for other category factors like the share of people who donate time and money and the percentage of income people donate to charitable organizations.
As for volunteering and service, the other category in WalletHub’s study, Arizona ranked 44th. The state also fell short in several factors in this category, including the share of people collecting and distributing food at food banks, where Arizona ranked 48th.
How can I contribute to charitable organizations?
There are multiple ways you can contribute to charitable institutions in your city or community.
Kirsten Gronbjerg, director of the Indiana Nonprofits Project, said people can start by looking for nonprofits that work on an issue they are concerned about and exploring their programs and services. Another option is to work with nonprofit intermediaries that know charitable institutions working on issues in their community, such as United Way organizations or community foundations.
She also said the amount of time and money people can donate can look very different for each individual and household because not only do people have vastly differing incomes and budgets, but they also have different levels of access to support systems.
“I find it hard to argue that there should be any fixed percentage for households when it comes to philanthropy,” she said.
If you would like to support charitable institutions in your community but find it hard to do so because you have limited time and availability, you can use WalletHub’s Charity Calculator to determine a strategy that fits your situation.
Many charities also have campaigns for Giving Tuesday, which this year falls on Dec. 3. Many organizations are matching or doubling people’s donations, providing an opportunity to encourage people to support the causes that matter to them.
