 100vw, 768px” data-recalc-dims=”1″/>Alice Driver Credit: Luis Garvan</p><p>Arkansas journalist Alice Driver’s latest book doesn’t hit shelves until next week, but dispatches of glowing press are already streaming in. </p><p>Coming out on Tuesday, Sept. 3 via Atria/One Signal Publishers, “Life and Death of the American Worker: The Immigrants Taking on America’s Largest Meatpacking Company” aims its sights on Tyson Foods, particularly tracing the enduring effects on surviving workers of a little-acknowledged deadly chemical accident that occurred at a Springdale plant in 2011. </p><p>In a starred review, Publishers Weekly described Driver’s investigation as “an intrepid effort of gumshoe journalism resulting in an intimate, unprecedented glimpse of the lives of America’s undocumented workforce during the pandemic.” Kirkus remarked that the book provides a “devastatingly frank, brutally detailed peek into the meatpacking industry” that “brilliantly exposes a damaging system that must be reformed.” Driver also received a J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award from Columbia Journalism School and the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard for “Life and Death of the American Worker.”</p><p>On Wednesday, Sept. 4, Driver will stop by Wordsworth Books (5920 R. St.), where she’ll be in conversation with Eliza Borné, former Oxford American editor and current director of development at the Central Arkansas Library System.
