The plan includes six chargers at Costco stores in Clermont, Florida, and Denver, Colorado, as well as three locations in California. The Loomis store, in Northern California, will have 14 chargers, while the Pleasanton and Sacramento stores will each get 10 chargers, according to the press release.
Drivers will be able to use the new chargers (which are 350-kilowatt) with the Electrify America app. However, Costco will set the charging prices.
It’s unclear whether Costco plans to continue working with both Electric Era and Electrify America or if it might bring in additional companies to expand EV charging at its locations. However, Electrify America could benefit from a major retail partner like Costco, especially after Walmart announced in 2023 that it would be moving away from the network to build its own EV charging stations.
Where to charge your EV at Costco, and how much it costs
Here are the full addresses of the Costco locations where Electrify America plans to install new EV charging stations. However, the specific locations in Denver, Loomis and Sacramento are not known yet:
Clermont, Florida: 4600 Collina Terrace, Clermont, FL 34711.
Pleasanton, California: 7200 Johnson Drive, Pleasanton, CA 94588.
Regarding the cost of charging, prices can vary by location. For example, at some Costco locations, charging costs include a $0.30 convenience fee and approximately $0.15 per kilowatt-hour (kWh). Non-members may be required to pay a refundable deposit, such as $20, which is returned after the charging session. Please note that these rates can differ depending on the specific Costco location and the agreements with charging providers.
How to Charge Your EV at Costco Using Your Membership Card
If you have recently bought a Goldstar or Executive membership, you can take advantage of Costco gas stations even if you drive an electric car:
Step 1: Locate a Costco Charging Station: Find a Costco location with EV chargers using the Electrify America app or website. Make sure the station is compatible with your vehicle and check if there are available spots.
Step 2: Park at the Charging Station: Drive to the designated charging area and park your vehicle in a spot with a compatible charger. Park your vehicle aligned with the charging port for easy access.
Step 3: Prepare Your Membership Card: Have your Costco membership card ready for use. Some locations may require the card to activate the charger or to access member-only pricing.
Step 4: Activate the Charger: Look for instructions on the charging station screen. If prompted, swipe or tap your Costco membership card to begin. Alternatively, you may need to scan the card using the Electrify America app linked to your membership.
Step 5: Connect the Charger to Your Vehicle: Open your vehicle’s charging port and connect the charger’s plug securely. The station will verify the connection and begin the charging process.
Step 6: Monitor the Charging Session: Follow the progress on the charger’s display or through the Electrify America app. Charging fees, which are typically calculated by kilowatt-hour (kWh), will appear on the screen.
Step 7: End the Charging Session: Once your vehicle is charged, press Stop on the charger or app. Disconnect the charging plug from your vehicle and return it to the holder.
Step 8: Review Your Payment:The cost will be deducted from the payment method linked to your Electrify America account, and your Costco membership may give you access to discounted rates. Make sure to save the receipt!
Step 9: Drive Off: Ensure your charging port is closed securely and the charger is properly stowed.
Costco, a pioneer in EV charging stations
Costco has a history with electric vehicles, offering deals on EVs and plug-in hybrids from time to time. The retailer was also one of the first big-box stores to install Level 2 AC chargers back in the 1990s. Despite this early adoption, the company discontinued those chargers in 2011 and 2012. Only recently has Costco begun reintroducing EV charging stations.
Costco’s first new DC fast charger, branded with its logo, was launched in October at a newly opened warehouse in Ridgefield, Washington. The station, installed by Electric Era, was completed in just seven weeks from the signing of the contract to its opening—a timeline that’s impressive even compared to the Tesla Supercharger network.
On Tuesday, Costco also revealed a new collaboration that allows customers in 48 U.S. cities to purchase Hyundai vehicles through participating local dealers on Amazon. With an initial focus on electric vehicles, this partnership could draw even more attention to the need for robust EV charging infrastructure.
