Multiple “underperforming” Shake Shack locations will close in several states, including California.
The chain, known for its burgers and milkshakes, detailed its plans in a document filed to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday. The document stated that the company “regularly evaluates its portfolio” of Shake Shack restaurants and has identified underperforming locations — some of which are negatively impacting nearby Shake Shacks by drawing sales away.
Nine Shake Shacks will close in California, Ohio and Texas. No other stores are expected to close based on this evaluation, and the closures won’t impact Shake Shack’s plans to open additional stores in these states, according to the filing.
Shake Shack, headquartered in New York, said management at the affected locations will be offered a position at neighboring Shake Shacks. Hourly team members will be eligible for rehire at other locations.
The news comes as California continues to see retailers and restaurants, including Big Lots and Red Lobster, reduce their footprint in the state.
