The preseason Associated Press All-America team was announced Monday morning and Colorado star Travis Hunter found his name on it.
It was just the latest honor for the projected first-round draft pick ahead of his junior season. The news of Hunter’s inclusion on the preseason AP All-America first team as an all-purpose player comes just four days after he was ranked as a top-three player in college football by a panel of ESPN experts.
Hunter was a full-time starter on both sides of the ball for the Buffaloes last season, playing 436 snaps on offense and 566 snaps on defense in addition to 30 special teams snaps (averaging 119 snaps per game). He finished second on the team with 57 catches for 721 yards and five touchdowns despite missing three games due to injury. Defensively, the Jackson State transfer tied for the team lead in interceptions (three) and led the team in pass breakups (five) while racking up 31 total tackles.
The impressive campaign led to him being named a first-team All-American by the AP at season’s end (the first Buff to ever earn first-team honors at the all-purpose position). It had been 13 years since Colorado football had a first-team All-American (OT Nate Solder, 2010).
Notably left off the preseason AP All-America team was Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who set a school record with 3,230 passing yards and 27 touchdowns last season. Georgia QB Carson Beck (first team) and Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel (second team) got the nod over the projected first-round NFL draft pick.
Hunter, Sanders and the Buffs open their 2024 season against North Dakota State on Thursday, Aug. 29.
