A pair of fan-favorite fast-food joints in Texas are being boasted among the best in the country.
As part of its 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards, USA Today revealed the top 10 fan-favorite regional fast-food chains in the United States.
This year, Texas’ very own Whataburger and Taco Cabana made the list — ranking ninth and seventh overall, respectively.

Whataburger, headquartered in San Antonio, has 1,033 locations across 15 states, with 735 restaurants in Texas alone.
“A trip to Texas wouldn’t be complete without a late-night trip through the Whataburger drive-thru. This quick-service concept, now operating in 16 states, has earned a loyal following for its patty melts, saucy burgers, and breakfast taquitos,” the report says.
The Texas-based fast-food joint, known for its distinct A-framed orange-and-white-stripe-roofed buildings, has a history dating back to the 1950s. Founded by Harmon Dobson and Paul Burton, it opened its first restaurant in Corpus Christi.
Each and every Whataburger is made to order, right when it’s ordered. And they’re still made with 100 percent pure, never-frozen beef and served on a big toasted five-inch bun with all “the extras” to suit your taste, the chain’s website says. “Grilled jalapeños, extra bacon, three slices of cheese, no tomatoes, extra pickles? No problem. Your Whataburger will be made just like you like it, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”
Taco Cabana, a popular Texas fast-casual chain serving Tex-Mex cuisine, has been in business in San Antonio since being founded in 1978. The chain currently has 144 restaurants across Texas.
The new Taco Cabana location in north Fort Worth has a modern look with its signature patio style incorporated inside the restaurant. Taco Cabana
‘The Texas-based Taco Cabana features a wide variety of menu items you’re probably familiar with: tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and enchiladas,” USA Today said about the chain. “But they set themselves apart by offering much more than that, including flautas, Cabana bowls, and chalupas. With a number of breakfast options and a larger dessert menu than most taco-based fast-food spots (think churros, sopapillas, and more), it’s no wonder it’s become a beloved eatery for many.”
