USA expected starting XI for Copa America 2024
One of the biggest questions Berhalter will have to answer is in goal. Matt Turner is expected to be the starter, despite limited playing time this season with Nottingham Forest. There’s a chance Drake Callender or Ethan Horvath could displace him, but Berhalter will likely stick with his preferred man.
In front of Turner will be a back line missing veteran Sergino Dest, who will miss the tournament with a knee injury. Joe Scally of Borussia Monchengladbach will take his place, likely with Tim Ream and Chris Richards paired in the middle. Antonee Robinson will patrol the left flank after a stellar season at Fulham, while Cameron Carter-Vickers will be a key backup in defense.
The “MMA” midfield of Tyler Adams, Yunus Musah, and Weston McKennie is expected to once again man the middle of the park. Giovanni Reyna will likely be the main playmaker off the bench, and could steal a spot in the starting XI should Berhalter deem his creativity be required. Johnny Cardoso will also see some time after a terrific La Liga campaign.
The biggest question mark, as it often is for the Yanks, will be at striker. Christian Pulisic is coming off an outstanding season at AC Milan, and he’ll line up at left wing with Timothy Weah on the opposite side, but Berhalter will hope to find someone to consistently provide goals from a group of central forwards including the in-form Haji Wright, the struggling Folarin Balogun, and the speedy Josh Sargent.
USA best bet for Copa America 2024
USA to finish second in Group C (+102 at Betano)
While the Americans are heavily favored to advance from their group, they are not the favorite to win the group based on the betting odds. I believe this is an accurate reflection of what the table will look like when the third match is completed for all teams in Group C.
Uruguay is a team with a dangerous striker in Darwin Nunez. He’s the kind of dynamic forward that the USMNT have struggled with in the past and he’s a consistent goal threat, which is key given that goal differential is the primary tiebreaker in the group stage.
I have no doubt the USA will qualify from their group, but I don’t have confidence in them taking all three points against Uruguay. This is a team that has two outstanding central defenders Jose Maria Gimenez and Ronald Araujo, and a pair of talented midfielders in Federico Valverde and Rodrigo Bentancur.
This lineup can cause the USMNT all sorts of issues from front to back and can expose some of their biggest weaknesses while containing their biggest strengths. It’s also a side that has already defeated Argentina and Brazil in the past nine months.
As such, I anticipate Uruguay will take as many if not more points than the Americans in the group stage, while also scoring more goals through the likes of Nunez, Valverde, and Facundo Pellistri. The Stars and Stripes will finish second in the group, and I’ll bank on that outcome at plus odds over at Betano.
