The United States men’s national team faces elimination from Copa America 2024 when it takes the field Monday evening against Uruguay in the final group stage match. The Americans stand on three points entering this match, tied with Panama but ahead on goal differential. Uruguay has six points and a great goal differential, so the South American side is highly likely to have a spot in the quarterfinals. USA is coming off a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Panama while Uruguay enters off a massive 5-1 win over Bolivia.

This is not the position USA expected to be in entering the final match. Had the Americans salvaged a draw against Panama despite going down to 10 men, this situation wouldn’t be so dire. Uruguay has been on fire through two matches, racking up a +7 goal differential will be hard to squander away. This will be a tough contest for the hosts, even though they come in as slight moneyline favorites.
Goalkeeper Matt Turner suffered an injury in the game against Panama but is trending towards being able to play in this match. Tim Weah will not be featured after picking up a red card against Panama. Uruguay do not have any major injuries, but might not play its best squad with qualification effectively secured.
It’s possible the Americans don’t advance even with a win. If USA wins and Panama also wins, USA will have to still have a superior goal differential. The current advantage is two goals for USA. If the Americans draw, they will need a Panama draw or loss to Bolivia to advance. If the Americans lose to Uruguay, they’ll need Bolivia to win and maintain a better goal differential than both Panama and Bolivia. In any result, United States is still going to be impacted by what happens in the Panama-Bolivia match.
USA and Uruguay have played to draws in the last two head-to-head meetings, including the most recent contest in 2022 in Kansas City. Tonight’s match is also in Kansas City and I see a similar script playing out. Gregg Berhalter’s side will draw against Uruguay and need other results to play out to advance.
