New Delhi: India has reiterated its call for urgent reforms of the international decision-making structures, especially expansion of the United Nations Security Council to give the Global South its due representation.
Proper representation of countries of Asia, Africa and South America in both the permanent and elected categories of a reformed UNSC is a “particular imperative”, external affairs minister S Jaishankar said at the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in New York. These countries cannot continue to be “short-changed”, he said.
“The world has evolved into a smart, interconnected and multipolar arena and its (UN) members have increased fourfold since the UN’s inception,” Jaishankar said. “Yet the UN remains a prisoner of the past.”
As a result, the Security Council struggles to fulfil its mandate of maintaining international peace and stability, he said. Increasing the representation of Global South in the currently 15-member permanent category of UNSC is crucial to ensure the body is representative, credible and effective, Jaishankar said.
Asia, Africa and South America must be given their legitimate voice, he said at the event held in the UN Headquarters on Wednesday.
Jaishankar said India remains unwavering in its commitment to rules-based, open, inclusive and transparent multilateral trading systems, with the WTO at its core.Jaishankar meets Lavrov: Jaishankar met his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the meeting and is understood to have discussed PM Narendra Modi’s next visit to Russia for a bilateral meeting with President Vladimir Putin and the BRICS summit on October 22-23.
